Welcome to Horror Movie Horror: Our Misadventures in Making a YouTube Horror Movie.
So my sister and I have done some strange things in our time, but deciding to make a horror movie specifically for YouTube might just take the cake. It started innocently enough, like most questionable decisions do—someone suggested it over coffee, and before we knew it, we were knee-deep in discussions about fake blood recipes and how to make our friends look convincingly terrified on camera. This blog, we realized, was going to be our lifeline—a place to chronicle the absurdity, the mishaps, and, with any luck, a few triumphs.
1. Why We’re Putting Ourselves Through This
We’ve always been drawn to horror, mostly because it’s cheaper than therapy. There’s something cathartic about watching someone else’s nightmare unfold on screen while knowing you’re safe and sound in your living room. But making a horror movie is a different beast altogether. We’re talking about a process that involves more than just sitting back and screaming at the characters to not go into that creepy basement (seriously, why do they always go into the creepy basement?).
So why are we doing this? Good question. We’re still figuring that out ourselves. Maybe it’s the thrill of seeing our wild ideas come to life. Maybe it’s the challenge of creating something that will scare the pants off our viewers. Or maybe it’s just because we wanted an excuse to buy all that Halloween makeup on sale. Regardless, we thought it would be a good idea to document this journey, so we could look back one day and laugh—or cry—at what we got ourselves into.
2. The Grand Vision (or Lack Thereof)
Now, you might be wondering what kind of YouTube horror movie we’re making. That’s a great question, and one we spent a ridiculous amount of time debating. We considered everything from slasher flicks to haunted houses to that subgenre where dolls come to life and terrorize people (side note: dolls are evil, everyone knows this). Eventually, we settled on psychological horror—because nothing says “fun” like messing with people’s minds. Plus it’s cheaper than attempting a monster movie.
The goal is to create something that’s equal parts creepy and compelling, something that will keep you up at night, questioning your own sanity. You know, the usual. But since we’re making this for YouTube, we also have to contend with the fact that most viewers have the attention span of a goldfish. That means we need to grab them by the throat from the get-go and not let go until the end credits roll.
3. Behind the Scenes: Chaos and Coffee
This blog is where we’ll share all the behind-the-scenes shenanigans, the moments of brilliance, and the moments where we seriously consider quitting and moving to a remote cabin in the woods (because nothing bad ever happens in remote cabins in the woods, right?). We’ll talk about the scriptwriting process, which so far has involved a lot of late nights and bad ideas. We’ll discuss casting, where we’re mostly just roping in friends who owe us favors. And of course, we’ll cover the technical stuff—like how to make fake blood that doesn’t stain your kitchen counters permanently.
We’ll also be navigating the wild world of YouTube, where algorithms rule and SEO is king. Apparently, making a horror movie isn’t enough—we also have to figure out how to get people to actually watch it. This involves more research than we ever anticipated and a newfound appreciation for clickbait.
4. Join Us (If You Dare)
At the end of the day, we’re doing this because we love horror and we’re just crazy enough to think we can pull it off. We hope you’ll join us on this journey, if only to witness the madness unfold. Who knows, maybe you’ll even be inspired to make your own YouTube horror movie—or at least avoid the mistakes we’re bound to make.
If we could ask you one favor? Subscribe to our YouTube channel. This thing isn’t going to be ready to release until October 2025 at the earliest and it would be AMAZING if we already had the 1000 subscribers we need to host a YouTube live to celebrate the premiere. Currently we have 2. 2 Subscribers. That’s right. Only 998 to go! We’ve also got an Instagram and TikTok you can check out too. But really, the big one is YouTube.
So, here we go. If nothing else, it’s going to be one hell of a ride.
